An ignition transformer is an electrical transformer used to generate high voltage pulses to fire a spark plug in an internal combustion engine. The transformer is usually driven by an electronic ignition system, which is activated by the engine's camshaft. The transformer is typically located on the side of the engine, near the spark plugs. Its primary winding is connected to a low voltage power source, usually 12 volts. Its secondary winding produces a high voltage, usually in the range of 4,000 to 40,000 volts. The high voltage is then used to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders.
