South Africas Department of Energy is set to release its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) in August although there have been growing concerns on whether this deadline will be met given that cabinet have yet to deliberate on the revised power generation plan. Whilst speaking at the DLO Africa Power Roundtable in Johannesburg the Director General Mr Thabane Zulu stated that the finalization of the IRP was receiving urgent attention from the government.
The revised IRP is expected to include higher levels of private sector investment in power generation with renewable energy and natural gas making a prominent feature in the countrys electricity mix.
Currently South Africa is trying to raise $25 billion in investment in its energy sector within the next five years. The Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe has taken tremendous steps in showing the countrys commitment in attracting investment by announcing the opening of a 5th bidding round under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme this after a two and half year delay in the programme.
